Hashrate

Also · Hash rate · EH/s

Hashrate is the number of hashes per second computed by a miner, a pool or the whole network. It measures the computing power behind Bitcoin’s security.

Hashrate counts how many SHA-256 attempts are made per second in the search for a block. For the whole network it is measured in exahashes per second, 1 EH/s being a quintillion hashes. A miner’s share of the total hashrate is roughly its probability of finding the next block.

Network hashrate cannot be read directly. It is estimated from how fast blocks are found relative to the current difficulty, which is why daily figures swing and 7-day averages are preferred. A rising hashrate means more hardware and energy committed to the chain, which raises the cost of an attack. It also triggers the next difficulty adjustment upward.
