Transaction fees

Also · Fee rate · sat/vB

Bitcoin transaction fees are the difference between a transaction’s inputs and outputs. They pay miners for block space and are quoted in satoshis per virtual byte.

A transaction’s fee is whatever is left when its outputs are subtracted from its inputs. The miner who includes it keeps the difference. Fees are compared in satoshis per virtual byte, because what is scarce is the space in a block, not the amount being sent.

When demand for block space rises, so does the price of getting in quickly. Fees also give spam a cost. As the block subsidy shrinks with each halving, fees are expected to carry a growing share of miner revenue, though nothing guarantees how much they will bring in.
