What this measures

Mining difficulty measures how hard it is to find a valid block. The protocol adjusts it every 2,016 blocks — about two weeks — so blocks keep arriving roughly every ten minutes regardless of how much hashrate joins or leaves. Rising difficulty tracks hashrate growth; rare downward adjustments usually follow miner capitulation or major disruptions.
