LNURL is a family of protocols that lets a wallet talk to a web server to fetch invoices, withdraw funds or log in, turning Lightning interactions into a scan or a click.

LNURL encodes a web address in a QR code or link. The wallet calls that address and the server replies with what to do next. LNURL-pay returns a fresh invoice for whatever amount the payer chooses, which is how a static “Lightning address” like name@domain works. LNURL-withdraw lets a service push sats to you after a scan. LNURL-auth logs you into a site with a signature from your wallet’s keys, no password or email.

The convenience relies on a web server being reachable and honest, which sits outside the Lightning protocol itself. BOLT12 offers aim to provide reusable payment requests without that server, over the Lightning network directly.
