Nostr is an open protocol for social publishing where identity is a key pair and messages are signed events carried by relays. Zaps add Lightning payments to posts.

Nostr, “Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays”, was designed by the developer fiatjaf in 2020. There is no server that owns your account. Your identity is a public key, shown as an npub. Everything you publish is an event signed with the matching private key and pushed to relays, simple servers that store and forward events. Clients read from several relays at once, so no single operator can silence you.

The protocol is not a blockchain and has no token. Its tie to Bitcoin is cultural and practical. Zaps let readers send Lightning payments to a post or a profile through LNURL, and the same key pair can sign for Nostr and for a wallet. Censorship resistance here means you can always find another relay.
