Taproot Assets

Also · Taro · Stablecoins on Lightning

Taproot Assets, formerly Taro, is Lightning Labs’ protocol for issuing assets such as stablecoins on Bitcoin and moving them through Lightning channels, with proofs held by the users.

Announced as Taro in 2022 and renamed in 2023, Taproot Assets embeds asset data in Taproot outputs. Issuance and transfers are committed inside ordinary-looking Bitcoin transactions, while the full proofs of ownership travel off-chain between wallets, a form of client-side validation close in spirit to RGB. Bitcoin stays unaware of the asset. Only its holders can verify it.

The headline use is dollars on Lightning. An asset channel can be opened with a stablecoin, and a payment can enter the network as USD, be routed as bitcoin by ordinary nodes, and exit as USD on the other side. Edge nodes make the conversion. Whether users want dollars on Bitcoin rails is a question of adoption that the technology alone does not settle.
