RGB is a smart contract and asset protocol for Bitcoin and Lightning built on client-side validation. Contract state lives with its owners, and Bitcoin UTXOs only commit to it.

RGB turns the usual model inside out. Instead of publishing a contract on a chain for everyone to execute, it keeps the contract and its history with the parties, who validate it themselves. Bitcoin is used only as a commitment layer, through single-use seals, each transfer being anchored in the spending of a specific UTXO. The chain sees an ordinary transaction and learns nothing about the asset or the amount.

The promise is scale and privacy for tokens, stablecoins and more complex contracts, with the ability to move them over Lightning channels. The cost is complexity. Peers must exchange and store their own data, wallets are young, and the ecosystem, led by the LNP/BP association, has been in development since 2019 with limited production use so far.
