Ark is a Bitcoin layer 2 where users hold virtual UTXOs inside shared on-chain outputs coordinated by an operator, with instant payments, no channels to manage and a unilateral exit to Bitcoin.
Introduced by Burak Keceli in 2023, Ark tackles Lightning’s hardest user problem, receiving without first finding inbound liquidity. An operator, the Ark server, periodically batches many users into 1 on-chain transaction whose output is a tree of pre-signed transactions. Each leaf is a user’s virtual UTXO. Payments between users happen off-chain in seconds, co-signed by the operator, and settle for good at the next round.
The user keeps keys and an exit path. If the operator disappears, the pre-signed tree can be published to reclaim funds on Bitcoin, before the VTXO expires. The costs move to the operator, who fronts liquidity and pays on-chain fees. 2 implementations lead the field, Second’s Bark and Arkade, which went live on mainnet in 2026.
