Unilateral exit

Also · Emergency exit · Exit path · Mass exit

A unilateral exit is a user’s ability to pull funds from a layer 2 back to Bitcoin without the operator’s cooperation. It is the line between a trust-minimized layer and a custodian.

Every honest layer 2 answers 1 question. If the other party vanishes or turns hostile, how do I get my bitcoin back? On Lightning, you force-close the channel with your latest commitment. On Ark, you publish the pre-signed branch of the tree down to your VTXO and wait out the timelocks. On Spark, you broadcast your pre-signed exit transaction. A federated sidechain or an e-cash mint offers no such path. There, your recourse is the federation’s goodwill.

Exits are the safety net, not the normal route. They cost on-chain fees, take time, and can become uneconomic for small balances if many users exit at once in a fee spike. A layer is only as trust-minimized as its exit is practical.
