Block

Also · Block header · Block time

A Bitcoin block groups transactions under a header that commits to them and to the previous block. One block is found every 10 minutes on average.

A block is a batch of transactions bundled by a miner under a compact header. The header contains the hash of the previous block, a Merkle root that commits to every transaction in the batch, a timestamp, the difficulty target and a nonce. Proof of work is computed on this header alone.

Blocks arrive every 10 minutes on average, but the interval varies widely. Some come seconds apart, others take more than an hour. The difficulty adjustment keeps the long-run average close to the target, and block weight caps how much a single block can carry.
