The Bitcoin blockchain is a public, time-ordered ledger of blocks, each committing to the previous one and made costly to rewrite by proof of work.
The blockchain is the public ledger of Bitcoin. It is a sequence of blocks, each one referencing the hash of the block before it, which makes the order of transactions costly to change after the fact. Every full node keeps a copy and checks it against the same rules.
The word is often detached from Bitcoin and sold on its own. Taken alone, a chain of blocks solves nothing. What makes Bitcoin work is the combination of this ledger with proof of work, a fixed monetary policy, independent nodes and a network of miners competing to extend it.
